Dried Herbs & Spices

Have you ever tried a new spice, only to find that it completely changed how you cook? You’re not alone. Whether you’re looking for something new and exciting.  Or want to season your food in the best possible way, we have all the dried herbs and spices you could ever need!

Spice up your food

Spices are a great way to add flavour to dishes. They can be used in sweet and savoury recipes, as well as with other spices. Here are some of the most popular ways you can use them:

  • In your soup or stew. Try adding cinnamon sticks, bay leaves or cloves for an extra flavour boost!
  • In the oven (to add depth). Oregano goes well with olive oil and garlic. Cumin seeds go well with potatoes. Basil is perfect for pasta sauce. Paprika goes great on chicken drumsticks - the options are endless!
  • In your cooking oil or butter. Add a pinch of spice to your cooking oil or butter before adding it to the dish you’re making. It will infuse the dish with flavour and help release other flavours. Could be from ingredients such as meat and vegetables
  • Try adding a dash of cardamom, cinnamon or cloves to your favourite herbal tea for an extra kick.
  • In your pastry. Adding a pinch of nutmeg or allspice to your pie crust before baking will add flavour and colour.
  • On pizza! Add oregano and basil to your tomato sauce for a delicious pizza topping.

Make your taste buds dance

Spices can be used to make food taste better, healthier and more attractive. For example, cinnamon is often used in baking. But also in other foods to enhance the flavour of sugars and other ingredients.

Additionally, spices can also be used to make foods look better. Consider paprika which can add a burst of red colour to soups or stews. They might otherwise be brownish or greyish looking. Also, consider turmeric. It gives curry its rich yellow hue while adding pungency at the same time! Finally, spices can also be used as masking agents. This is so that certain bitter flavours become palatable. They do this by masking their bitterness with spiciness.

Try some new spices

  • Let’s say you have a spice rack with all the common ones that you use, but there are some you haven't tried yet! Pick any one of them and make something with it
  • How do people usually use their favourite spices? Do they put them on sandwiches? In soups? Or they sprinkle it on a salad or vegetables to add flavour and colour. Think about how else these spices could be used and experiment!

You could also make a spice mix! This is a great way to use up all your leftover spices. It is also fun because you can experiment with different combinations.
